18 december 2018 – Turkey uses Spain and the imprisonment of Catalan leaders as an example to justify the arrest of Kurdish politicians, dissident Eyyup Doru has said in an interview with the Catalan News Agency (ACN). While stressing that Turkey is ‘a fascist regime’ and Spain ‘a democratic state,’ Doru said that ‘there was no violence’ in Catalonia during the independence referendum a year ago, and therefore it’s ‘unacceptable’ to put people in prison ‘for expressing their views.’

13 december 2018 – Tanià Verge is een collega van mij aan de Universiteit Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. Zij werd in september vorig jaar door de Catalaanse regering aangesteld als lid van de ‘sindicatura electoral’. Dat was het officiële orgaan dat moest toezien op het goede verloop van het onafhankelijkheidsreferendum en ook de resultaten ervan moest vaststellen. Naast Tània Verge zat er nog één andere politicoloog in de commissie, en drie juristen. De Spaanse regering vocht de oprichting van deze commissie meteen aan bij het Grondwettelijk Hof. Dat Hof legde vervolgens een dwangsom op van 12.000 euro per persoon voor elke dag dat ze lid bleven van de Commissie. Daardoor konden de leden niet anders dan ontslag nemen. Dit was, tussen haakjes, een zware slag voor de organisatie van het referendum. Want nu was er geen neutrale instantie die de resultaten officieel kon vaststellen.

Labels such as ‘coup leaders’ and comparisons to Nazism were used in reference to the Catalan leaders who promoted the self-determination referendum. The contents of the emails, which were shared in an internal forum within the Spanish judiciary, have been revealed by digital diaries ElDiario.es and ElMon.cat.
